GIVE UP MEAT: Margarette Driscoll’s article makes frightening reading. Food-related health crises such as rising obesity levels, diabetes, various forms of cancer and heart disease raise the possibility that children will die before their parents.

However, it is wrong to assume that the middle classes are somehow immune to this crisis. The whole food chain in this country is controlled by only 10 large outlets; the consumer has very little choice in demanding healthier food.

The relentless drive to produce cheap meat, the current debate about the welfare of animals and GM crops means that the time has come for the public to be much more vociferous about the right to safe, healthy food. There is a growing realisation that a meat-free diet is perhaps the way forward.
