FORMER Mayor Brenda Kirby joined more than 120 guests for a vegetarian lunch at the Archbishop Lanfranc High School.

It marked the Indian Cultural Centre’s 30th festive gathering and was organised by founder, Nitin Mehta MBE, who has made the event a success every year since 1980.

Mr Mehta said: “The lunch is organised to promote better understanding between the communities living in Croydon and to celebrate Christmas which is not only a religious festival, but also a national festival.

“The Indian community is proud to be British and endeavours to play a positive role in promoting all that is best in the British way of life.

“We did so by bringing traditional Indian Vegan food such as rice, curry and sweet salad that was prepared by the ladies of the centre,” he added.

Mrs Kirby attended the lunch despite suffering terminal lung and brain cancer.

She was presented with a bouquet of flowers on her arrival.
