It was the wealth and prosperity of India that brought so many invaders to its doors. 800 years of Mughal rule and 200 years of British rule had reduced India to abject poverty and psychologically crippled. Gandhi had the massive job of mobilizing the masses and confront the world’s greatest power. He dug deep into his ancient heritage and decided to fight not with violence but by non-cooperation and by appealing to the  moral conscience of the British people at large. In the end the mass awakening of the people of India, an emerging new world order and progressive voices all obliged the British to quit India. He had no bitterness towards the British, he inspired freedom movements in many countries. Nelson Mandela and many other freedom fighters considered Gandhi as an inspiration. Indeed the Truth and Reconciliation committee in South Africa was very much on Gandhian lines. Indians can look back with pride at what they have achieved especially as the world’s largest democracy.
