British Government to drop the acronym BAME!

BAME which stands for Black Asian Minority Ethnic was a term that gave no recognition to the distinct nationalities living in Britain. A committee set up after the Black Lives Matter campaign has recommended the removal of the term BAME.

In 2020 my letter to the Independent objecting to this term was published:

Dear Editor
Amanda Baker’s article objecting to the term BAME is valid and needs to be dropped urgently. There is a simple solution to this problem which has been lingering for over 40 years. There was a time when minorities were called, ‘coloured’. Then there was a blanket term, ‘black’ for all Africans and afro-Caribbean’s and, ‘Asian’ for everyone from the subcontinent. There are huge differences between the people from the subcontinent. The Indian community wants to be known as just that-Indian. It hurts a lot to read headlines like, ‘ Asian Gangs’. The solution is that every ethnic group should be called by their ethnic origin. BAME has been foisted upon us by stealth. We are surprised as to how it has suddenly become widely used. The message is clear, we do not want to be known as BAME.
