[27/09, 00:11] Nitin Mehta: The recent violent clashes in Ladakh has given Hannah an opportunity to target Modi and the clamping down of dissent in the country. The readers of the Guardian are being given half truths by Hannah.
Sonam Wangchuk a leading figure in Ladakh has been detained. Hannah admits that his detention came after demonstrations in the regional capital of Leh turned violent on Wednesday. The local offices of Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were among the buildings set on fire. The police responded with live ammunition, killing at least four protesters who were demanding autonomy and statehood for Ladakh.
Hannah claims that Ladakh territory was part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir before it was unilaterally dissolved by the Modi government and brought fully under its control, to the anger and frustration of the local population.
The people of Ladakh in fact welcomed the separation from J&K with jubilation. That had been their long standing demand.
In the Constitution of India the Sixth Schedule safeguards the rights of the people of Ladakh and other minorities.. The Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils of Leh and Kargil have significant legislative, judicial, and administrative autonomy to protect the rights, culture, and resources of the tribal communities, granting them control over land, forests, and governance to prevent exploitation.
The current conflict will be resolved soon keeping in mind the sensitivities of the people of Ladakh and the needs of the military to safeguard the nation. Hannah does not need to lose any sleep over that.
Finally Hannah bemoans Modi’s actions against the Amnesty International and the Greenpeace. Amnesty is agenda driven and the Greenpeace tends to be more political than environmental.
