Catherine Philp’s article regarding the vegetarian food served to the leaders of BRIC nations recently in Delhi takes the decline of the Sunday Times to new levels. It is trivia worthy of a tabloid. Catherine also makes sweeping statements which are fake and do not stand up to any scrutiny. She claims that vegetarianism in India is a reserve of upper caste Hindus who are the core group supporters of ruling BJP. This is an absurd statement. All devout Hindus are vegetarian as are Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists. Compassion to animals is a core philosophy of Indian culture going back tens of thousands of years.

She goes on to expose her muddled thinking by saying contradictory things.

Millions of Hindus she says are ‘near’ vegetarians not because of religious belief but because they cannot afford animal protein. A typical ignorant comment by a journalist who has no clue of the people amongst whom she is living. It is narcissism. Further contradicting her own words she says that some Hindus eat Beef as a low cost protein option! She goes on to quote some known Hindu haters who  objected to the all vegetarian menu served to the BRIC leaders by PM Modi. In Europe Vegetarianism and Veganism has millions of adherents. Some of the greatest artists. actors, sportsmen and women are vegetarian or vegan. Paul McCartney has said that if the slaughterhouses had glass everyone would become vegetarian. Many nations are promoting a plant based diet to help stop global warming and to combat many killer diseases associated with meat eating. The planet is facing an existential crisis due to the 120 billion animals raised for meat annually. Human beings will  have to turn towards vegetarianism if the planet is to avoid a catastrophe. Catherine claims that promotion of vegetarianism is part of Hindu Majoritarianism. The sooner Catherine and like minded journalists understand that India is a Hindu majority country and Hindu ethos and values will prevail just the better. Just as in the UK Christian values and ethos prevail.
