Feed the world

Sir: It is a wonderful gesture on behalf of The Independent staff to raise money for the famine in parts of Africa. We in Europe also need to make lifestyle changes as part of a long-term solution to the problem of starvation.

At present 38 per cent of all grain grown in the world is fed to animals. Food that could feed human beings is diverted to feed the animals. A staggering 47.9 bn animals were killed for food in 2001. Poor countries are also using up fertile land to grow animal fodder to feed animals raised for slaughter in Europe.

The amount of soya fed to animals in the US could feed the whole of the populations of India and China. Deforestation, the pollution of world’s waterways, acid rain and a host of other problems can be avoided if mankind weaned itself off a meat diet.
