In her article dated 2 January 2026 in the Times, Amrit writes about a book on the Maharajas by publisher Pramod Kapoor. She observes that the Maharajas ranged from being idiosyncratic, boorish, sadistic to saintly. Pramod Kapoor never called them sadistic.
A sadist is a person who gets pleasure or gratification from causing physical or psychological pain, suffering, or humiliation to others, ranging from extreme violence to subtle bullying.
The Maharajas took their role seriously and looked after the welfare of the people. They are still held in great respect. The Maharaja of present day Jamnagar in Gujarat is credited for saving around 1000 Polish orphans between 1942 and 1946. He gave them shelter when many countries refused to take them. He gave them every facility including education and a Christian teacher. The Polish remember him till this day.
