My reply sent to the Editor of the Guardian and Hannah as well as her co- writer.
Hannah’s headline screams that India is deporting Bangladeshi people from India. Hannah and Shaikh are outraged that India is expelling them without due judicial process. Hannah of course is not interested in the slightest about the persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh. At the time of independence the Hindu population in Bangladesh was 25% today it is 8%. The persecution has intensified recently. Since Hannah likes quoting Human Rights groups a lot where it serves her purpose, here is a report from Amnesty International: Saad Hammadi, Amnesty International’s South Asia Campaigner, said: “Reports of a spate of attacks by angry mobs against members of the Hindu community, their homes, temples and puja pandals during the country’s biggest Hindu festival, are symptomatic of the growing anti-minority sentiment in the country. Fellow Muslims the Rohingyas are also not spared by Bangladesh. Bangladesh authorities are failing to adequately protect Rohingya refugees from surging violence by armed groups and criminal gangs, with layers of barriers to police, legal, and medical assistance.
Now let us return to Hannah’s favourite punch bag. The ruling nationalist Hindu BJP party has over the last 11 years harassed and disenfranchised India’s 200 million Muslims she cries. A juvenile, laughable claim. Even after 11 years of Hindu rule the Muslims are still living in India that alone is proof that Hannah’s claims are humbug. Muslims are in the Military, in politics and in all walks of life. The current problem of deportation started after the killing of 25 Hindus by what Hannah calls militants not terrorists. At least she has named those who were killed as Hindus unlike before. Regarding expelling illegal immigrants if they do not have the identity card which every Indian citizen carries then they are illegals. No judicial process is required. Hannah also complains that only Muslims are expelled and Hindus, Sikhs and others are not expelled. Hindus and Sikhs are not expelled because they have nowhere to go. India is their only home. They have been ethnically cleansed from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Hannah quotes Taskin Fahmina who is senior researcher of Bangladesh Human Rights. According to Taskin India’s deportation of the Bangladeshi nationals is wrong. Has Taskin had time to check the Human Rights of Rohingyas and Hindus in Bangladesh?
Now let us come to the UK and its policy for illegal immigrants. The UK government has a policy to remove individuals who enter the country illegally, including those arriving by small boats. Sweden too is planning mass deportations of illegal immigrants and so does President Trump. Many other European countries are also planning the same. Will Hannah call the British PM a Christian nationalist leader, Sweden’s leader as Christian nationalist leader? Surely Hannah should call Trump a Christian nationalist leader. The hypocrisy of it all is comical if it was not so full of hatred.
