In today’s Times(28 December 2021) there is a story of the Indian Government blocking the foreign funds coming into Mother Theresa’s Charity
In the comments column the usual Modi and BJP bashing started. Both were called extremist Hindus. My following comments were published and appreciated by the fair minded people.
There are criminal charges pending on Theresa’s Charity regarding selling orphan babies. Fundamentalist Christian groups are active and publish highly offensive literature on Hindu religion. Over 30 million Christians live happily in India but the prostelysing and demands for breaking away from India in some states with high Christian population cannot be tolerated. A colossal amount of money comes into India for converting Hindus.
Hindus are and will always be tolerant. Its core belief is that here are many paths to God. The Zoroastrian’s, Bahia’s, Tibetan Buddhists and the Jewish all have found a safe heaven in India. But it takes 2 to tango. Minority faiths should respect the ethos of the majority. They can be unreasonable and even violent sometimes.
The UK remains an officially Christian country with all major occasions in its life solemnized by the Church; it does not take anything away from the minorities. Similarly India is a Hindu majority nation and acknowledging its ethos does not take anything away from the minorities. Modi is a nationalist in that sense but there are forces who want to deny the Hindus in their own country their heritage. The media and the left wing lobby call it, ‘ Majoritarianism’ as if it was a crime!
