In yesterday’s Guardian (4 October 2023) there was an article on India-Canada relations. The writer claimed that
India had a anti-Western foreign policy and the US and UK were not speaking up as India was a
economic power and they needed India as a counter balance to China. I sent the following to the
journalist and the editor of the Guardian:
Dear Rupert
You write that India pursues a policy counter to Western interests. Apart from the Ukraine question which is wrongly perceived as anti Western policy, India does not have an anti Western agenda. Regarding Ukraine, India is not siding with Russia or the West. It wants the warring parties to negotiate a peaceful solution. This is imperative as Ukraine is experiencing a lot of destruction, damage and loss of life. More and more influential voices in the West are also backing a halt to the war. It is a fact that India is an emerging superpower and an economic giant. The US and the UK realise this. India is also a democratic nation which can counter Chinese aggression. It is only the Guardian which thinks otherwise and in the grand scheme of things it is irrelevant.
