In the Times (2/2/2022) Amrit Dhilon has written an article with the heading:
‘Narendra Modi has traces of God in him says a BJP Minister as the personality cult grows’. There is an attempt to deify Modi according to her. She further says that there has been a long tendency to view the Prime Minister as’ Maa-Baap’- a national parent who provides for the needy in Indian political culture.
My response on the comments pages was published:
Out of a population of 1.2 billion people a few speak that Modi is God like and it gets splashed. The fact is that Modi is liked and respected because he is not corrupt and he has been voted one of the best leaders in the world. He has fought the Covid with amazing tenacity. Per population the UK and US have had far greater deaths than India. Just imagine with a population of 65 Million we were overwhelmed by Covid and India which has over 20 states the size of England or bigger and a population of 1.2 billion people managed to contain the epidemic. Only a real leader can achieve this. Modi has transformed India from villages to cities and it remains the fastest growing economy in the world. The poor who could not open accounts and had to rely on middlemen can now open their accounts and thanks to rapid digitisation people get their dues straight in the Bank. For decades the Socialist leaders had paid lip service to the poor masses and done little. They had deliberately created divisions between different faiths and groups. Under Modi everyone can enjoy the fruits of success without fear or favour. Modi is proud of India’s ancient heritage and that is very difficult for liberal left leaning media and academics here in the UK and USA to digest and so they portray him negatively at every opportunity. For the masses of India their views are irrelevant and biased.
