Now Indian’s are humourless!

Writing in the Guardian dated 3 January 2024 Amrita Dhillon from Delhi

claims Indian’s are humourless especially under the Modi government! She is concerned that the recent mimicry of the Indian vice president in parliament by the opposition MP Kalyan Banerjee has not been taken as a joke. Apparently the MP walked and talked like the vice president in a comical way. Mimicking the vice president of a country is not a joke. It is a tasteless caricature of a person holding high office.

Amrita claims that Indian politicians and officials tend to take themselves very seriously. Hillariously she goes on to moan that political humour has fallen to a new low under the BJP! Amongst other things she says is that there are no comedy skits of politicians. This is a blatant lie as the’ So Sorry’ an exclusive politons series by India Today Group is extremely funny and does not spare even the Prime Minister. Warming to her theme she bemoans that stand up comics are also nervous of being charged with the crime of offending a particular community. She fails to acknowledge that stand up comedians exclusively target Hindu faith or Hindu Gods. She quotes a cartoonist Ravi Shankar who says that it is not just the politicians who cannot take a joke. Indian’s in general too cannot laugh at themselves!

These people are getting beyond absurd and desperately clutching at straws. One wonders whether to cry or laugh!
